The author starts and concludes her article by the same two initiating images of a late 11th century psalter written and illuminated at the north Italian monastry of Polirone. The question arising, which then leads to a survey of David scenes and portraits troughout the early Middle Ages from the 4th to the 11th c. is what tradition could have favored such an outstanding representation – iconographically as well as stylistically – at that particular time and place? The wooden doors of the Ambrosian Basilica in Milan seem to be the trigger to that north Italian tradition.
