Ein deutsch-nationales Blatt am Rande des deutschen Sprachraums? Anmerkungen zu Nationalitäten- bzw. Sprachenfragen
Volltext herunterladenThe ‹Carinthia›, one of the oldest German language periodicals, has been published since 1811 in the city of Klagenfurt, Austria, and has always been at the periphery of the German-speaking world. This article focuses on the first half of the 19th century and on the relationship of the periodical to Germany and the ‹German question› in the years 1848/49. It will be shown how the debates in German cultural and political centres (Frankfurt, Vienna, Berlin) are reflected in the ‹Carinthia›, and how the publication becomes aware of its particular bicultural and bilingual (German-Slovenian) position. The periodical can be characterized not as German-national but as being ‹patriotic› towards the Austria multinational empire. It gives room to the national duality of the Carinthian Slovenes and their cultural expression. It is ‹Slovenian-friendly› in terms of questions of nationality and language, as long as the predominant German culture is not called into question.
