«Ich kann nur in den untern Regionen atmen»
Die Freiheitsproblematik in Robert Walsers ‹Jakob von Gunten›
Volltext herunterladenOne of the main themes in Robert Walser’s novel ‹Jakob von Gunten is freedom. The behaviour of the protagonist is regarded as escaping from freedom; from this point of view, the first two parts of the present paper approach the psychical motivations and possibilities of escaping from the negative freedom. A comprehensive analysis shows that the negative freedom of the modern society in the sense of Erich Fromm has caused Jakob’s escape from the society, and that Robert Walser and Erich Fromm had actually similar thoughts on the means of escaping from freedom. After fleeing the negative freedom, the protagonist tries to find new freedom, with which the last part of this paper deals. He first finds spiritual freedom by getting rid of the capitalist society and the mechanical production. Finally, he attaines total freedom, that is to say, the unity of mental and physical freedom.
