Genres are cultural artefacts shaped by norms and values of the social groups that practice them. The stylistic form of genres plays a central role, as their communicative functions can always be realized by different stylistic refinements. This makes it possible to establish, negotiate and represent cultural order symbolically by means of the form. Genre change can thus be interpreted in the context of cultural shifts. This paper uses the example of the Swiss TV news show ‹Tagesschau› to shed light on genre change and the mutual relation of language and culture. It demonstrates how the ‹genre profile› of the show has shifted since the 1950s, discussing how the ‹film item› was replaced by the so-called ‹package›, the correspondent news story, as the central genre. These results will be interpreted against the background of change in the journalistic culture of the show.
