The aim of this paper is to describe the trends in the representation of the human form, ranging from the pseudo-normal to previously unattained levels, as seen in German-speaking countries between 1900 and 1945. Academic aesthetics becomes inadequate when attempting to understand the artist’s need for expression with all the accompanying irresolvable contradictions. Our idea is to expose those great configurating energies that determine the life of forms during this period. The further we stray from the norm, the more the human being, as pictured in art, becomes unrecognizable, having been deformed or fragmented by history and the violence of its impact, as well as oversimplified or metamorphosed by the reactive forces of the imaginary.
