The Horror of Myth

Turns in Genre and the Body in Hofmannsthal's Elektra

Der Aufsatz untersucht Hofmannsthals 1903 erschienene Bearbeitung der sophokleischen Elektra aus zwei Blickwinkeln. Auf der ästhetischen Ebene werden Trends in Hofmannsthals literarischer Karriere wie auch artistische Trends der Jahrhundertwende diskutiert, um herauszuheben, wie das Drama cineastische Techniken in Verbindung mit expressionistischen Gruselfilmen antizipiert. Daraufhin wird ein ausgedehnter Begriff von »Horror« verwendet, um sich Repräsentationen des Körpers anzunähern und um Theorien zu testen, die unter dem Etikett des Performativen und der body turns vorgebracht werden.

This essay examines Hofmannsthal’s 1903 adaptation of the Sophoclean Elektra from two angles. At the aesthetic level, it discusses trends in Hofmannsthal’s literary career as well as artistic trends around the turn of the century to highlight how the drama anticipates cinematic techniques associated with expressionist horror films. It then uses an expanded theoretical notion of »horror« to approach representations of the body and to test theories put forth under the label of the performative and body turns.
