Thomas Hürlimann is currently one of the most famous Swiss contemporary playwrights after Friedrich Dürrenmatt. Though he admits himself – as a son of a former Swiss President – being deeply influenced by his own Swiss family life in his prose fiction (novels and short stories), the aim of his plays is a more moral one, because his plays tend to unveil and discover again Switzerland’s real face. Therefore he dares to attack the myth of neutrality and other Swiss stereotypes by auto-satirical devices which are illustrated here in his two most famous plays, ‹Der Gesandte› (1991) and ‹Das Lied der Heimat› (1998).
