Looking back at his Baltic years in his memories, the Baltic German writer Theodor Hermann Pantenius (1843–1915) remembers the central place occupied by German culture in his native country Courland and the double life the German minority sometimes experienced, as everyday concerns in the Baltic regions differed from those in Germany. Pantenius’s narrative work thus constitutes an illustration of Baltic particularism, of the way the privileged German part of the population established a clear-cut distinction between Latvian people and themselves, and of the tragic consequences resulting from the incapacity of countrymen to let the framework inherited from the Middle Ages evolve. This article will examine the way the author addresses the issue of Baltic particularism in narratives published at the end of the 19th century (Um ein Ei, Unser Graf, Käthchen Hortensius, Der alte Jungherr und seine Liebe), against the background of his autobiography (Aus den Jugendjahren eines alten Kurländers, 1907/1910).
